Dr. Asato Ikeda is an associate professor at Fordham University. She specializes in the study of sex culture from historical and cultural perspectives, particularly through the examination of visual culture produced during the early modern and modern periods. Her research includes the representation of women sold into pleasure quarters during the Edo period, as well as photographs female migrants to Southeast Asia and North America who engaged in sex work in the early twentieth century—histories that are often underrepresented.
