Professor Akiko Takeyama at Kansas University is our PI and the supervisor of the project. She specializes in gender, sexuality, and class dynamics in Japan. Her second book, Involuntary Consent: The Illusion of Choice in Japan’s Adult Video Industry (Stanford University Press, 2023), ethnographically demonstrates that neither overtly coerced nor freely voluntary consent is sought or given in Japan’s adult video industry and precarious labor market. Her grounded theory of involuntary consent problematizes the taken-for-granted legal premises of autonomy, freedom of choice, and equality under the law.
